Fibreglass Manufacture Case Study: Over-Bridge Safety Screens for Auckland’s Electrified Rail Network

Case Studies

Client: Auckland Regional Council and KiwiRail
Design & Engineering Partners: Pollen Limited (Design), Gurit (Composite Engineering)
Manufacturer: The Composite Group, Christchurch

Background

As Auckland continued the rollout of its electrified rail network, the Auckland Regional Council identified an urgent need to prevent tampering with overhead wires on pedestrian over-bridges. They required a durable, interlocking safety screen system that would not only eliminate safety risks but also enhance the visual appeal of busy urban transport corridors.

Our Role

Drawing on our extensive experience in composite product manufacturing, we were awarded the contract to bring this innovative solution to life. Working alongside the design team at Pollen Limited and composite engineers at Gurit, we transformed the concept into a fully engineered and manufacturable product.

What We Delivered

Using the approved engineering data, our team:

  • Built the plug and mould system required for precise, repeatable production.
  • Manufactured the full set of fibreglass screen components, designed to interlock seamlessly for maximum structural integrity.
  • Ensured each component met strict durability, safety and aesthetic standards suitable for public infrastructure.
  • Delivered the completed units to Auckland, ready for installation across selected over-bridges.

Outcome

The finished ARC Over-bridge Safety Screen system is a practical and elegant response to a major safety concern. The four-component interlocking design provides a robust barrier and effectively eliminates overhead wire interference. Beyond function, the colourful, sculptural form adds a dramatic visual element to the city’s rail network, enriching the surrounding urban landscape.

This project showcases how collaboration between designers, engineers and specialist manufacturers can produce infrastructure solutions that are strong, safe and visually compelling.
