Case Study: Fibreglass Lining of Tekapo Hot Springs Pools (2007)

Client Overview

Tekapo Springs is now regarded as one of New Zealand’s most iconic alpine attractions, offering visitors a unique combination of hot pools, day spa facilities, and stunning views of the Mackenzie Basin.

But in 2006 it was still a dream, with work having just started on a new ice rink which opened in June 2007. As part of the major development project, Tekapo Springs also constructed a new series of hot pools designed to elevate the visitor experience and support the region’s growing tourism industry.

Project Brief

Built with concrete and concrete block, the complex developers required a durable, high-quality lining system for their new hot pools—one that could withstand constant water exposure, thermal cycling, and heavy visitor use, all while maintaining a clean, attractive appearance. Fibreglass was selected as the preferred solution due to its proven longevity, low maintenance needs, and ability to deliver a flawless, watertight finish.

Our Role

Following our success with the Hamner Springs Thermal Pools, our team was contracted to complete the full fibreglass lining of the three newly built hot pools.
This involved:

  • Preparing the concrete pool surfaces for composite application
  • Applying a multi-layered fibreglass laminate for strength and durability
  • Finishing with a high-quality gelcoat designed for thermal and chemical resistance
  • Ensuring all surfaces were smooth, hygienic, and visually appealing
  • Working to a strict project schedule to align with the facility’s construction timeline

Outcome

The completed fibreglass linings delivered a robust, long-lasting surface finish that has proven its performance over many years of daily public use. The pools achieved:

  • Excellent watertight integrity
  • A smooth, easy-to-clean surface
  • Strong resistance to heat, chemicals, and UV exposure
  • A premium aesthetic aligned with the high-end visitor experience Tekapo Springs sought to create

Since opening in January 2008, Tekapo Springs has become a flagship attraction in the South Island, and the pool surfaces continue to demonstrate the value of quality fibreglass craftsmanship.
